Common Special Abilities
Gaikotsu | Skeleton
"Shark skeletons are very different from those of bony fish and terrestrial vertebrates. Sharks and other cartilaginous fish (skates and rays) have skeletons made of cartilage and connective tissue. Cartilage is flexible and durable, yet is about half the normal density of bone. This reduces the skeleton’s weight, saving energy. Sharks have no rib cage and, therefore, on land, a shark's own weight can crush it."
This applies to all sharks in this summoning family, as their skeletal structure to so light, they are very hard to catch or avoid in water, therefore making them extremely effective hunters and scouts.
Taionchousetsu | Thermoregulation
"Most sharks are "cold-blooded", or more precisely poikilothermic, meaning that their internal body temperature matches that of their ambient environment. Members of the family Lamnidae, such as the shortfin mako shark and the great white shark, are homeothermic and maintain a higher body temperature than the surrounding water. In these sharks, a strip of aerobic red muscle located near the center of the body generates the heat, which the body retains via a countercurrent exchange mechanism by a system of blood vessels called the rete mirabile ("miraculous net"). The common thresher shark has a similar mechanism for maintaining an elevated body temperature, which is thought to have evolved independently"
Again, this applies to all sharks in the summoning family. Due to the fact that they can regulate their body heat to exactly match the water that surrounds them, thermal sensory is virtually useless against these sharks.
Kankaku Nyuuroku | Sensory Inputs
- Smell
"Sharks have keen olfactory senses, located in the short duct (which is not fused, unlike bony fish) between the anterior and posterior nasal openings, with some species able to detect as little as one part per million of blood in seawater. Sharks have the ability to determine the direction of a given scent based on the timing of scent detection in each nostril. This is similar to the method mammals use to determine direction of sound. They are more attracted to the chemicals found in the guts of many species, and as a result often linger near or in sewage outfalls. Some species, such as nurse sharks, have external barbels that greatly increase their ability to sense prey."
This means that any prey is possible for them to find as long as they are able to follow a scent trail through water, similar to how a dog would on land. The shark will then either begin to give chase or return to it's summoner with information.
- Electroreception
"The Ampullae of Lorenzini are the electroreceptor organs. They number in the hundreds to thousands. Sharks use the Ampullae of Lorenzini to detect the electromagnetic fields that all living things produce. This helps sharks (particularly the hammerhead shark) find prey. The shark has the greatest electrical sensitivity of any animal. Sharks find prey hidden in sand by detecting the electric fields they produce. Ocean currents moving in the magnetic field of the Earth also generate electric fields that sharks can use for orientation and possibly navigation."
Again, this helps with hunting prey, as even the slightest twitch will give off electrical signals from the brain, allowing them to find you. This is amplified if the target is under extreme stress or is moving a lot. While this is a very effective method of tracking and navigation, it is by no means full-proof. Often sharks have muddled the natural rotation of the globe with the electrical signal of the target and become confused.
C
Rank One Summoning
Name: Akuchi | 悪血 | Impure Blood
Description:
A rather small dwarf lanternshark (Etmopterus perryi), Akuchi is primarily used for scouting due to it's highly developed senses and swimming speed. It's name is derived from it's hide, which is coloured a blood red, which you would think would make him stand out a lot more in water, however due to the dullness of the red, he tends to fade into the background, as the eyes glance over and miss the red, even though you'd think it'd be rather stand-out.
Special Abilities:
Unsounin | Carrier
Akuchi, while not able to contribute much in battle, is capable of holding a single small scroll in it's belly, which it can conceal and deliver to a safe place. This is useful for delivering or receiving reports of enemy activity and/or delivering important items around the battlefield.
Jutsu:
Suiton: Teppōdama
Suiton: Mizuame Nabara
*Note* You may have boss summons.
